Get Lost in Fort Ord... a Rogaine

Visit "Get Lost... Running, Racing"

Rogaining is a sport of long distance cross-country navigation, involving both route planning and navigation between checkpoints using a variety of map types. In a rogaine, teams of 2-5 people choose which checkpoints to visit within a time limit with the intent of maximizing their score. Teamwork, endurance, competition and an appreciation for the natural environment are features of the sport. Championship rogaines are 24 hours long, however rogaines can be as short as 2 hours.

Wiki Definition of Rogaine

Caution! Poison Oak in its Winter Incarnation

Poison oak is extremely difficult to detect during wintertime. The barren plant blends with virtually all other plants. Late winter weather provides moisture and increasing light which promotes growth and an abundance of the toxic substances which comprise the internal protoplasm of the noxious plant.

Inclement weather and wet trails influenced BETA 16's decision to forgo an equestrian patrol and to venture out on patrol as a hiker. With her faithful K9 companion, Cairo, Pam hiked the trails above Creekside Terrace on this damp mid-winter day.

Hash Run

(B... double E, double R... U N)

While out on BETA Patrol recently, BETA One and BETA guest Susan encountered a group of several visitors who comprised a meandering moving party. The "runners", some in costume, were making their way up toward Sandy Ridge Road from Trail 72 on Trail 34 the waterfall. One of the runners stopped and explained the "reasoning" behind the parade...

The Hash House Harriers (abbreviated to HHH, H3, or referred to simply as Hashing) is an international group of non-competitive running, social and drinking clubs. An event organized by a club is known as a Hash or Hash Run, with participants calling themselves Hashers or Hares and Hounds.

Hashing originated in December 1938 in Kuala Lumpur, then in the Federated Malay States (now Malaysia), when a group of British colonial officers and expatriates began meeting on Monday evenings to run, in a fashion patterned after the traditional British Paper Chase or "Hare and Hounds", to rid themselves of the excesses of the previous weekend. The original members included, Albert Stephen (A.S.) Ignatius "G" Gispert, Cecil Lee, Frederick "Horse" Thomson, Ronald "Torch" Bennett and John Woodrow.

Members often describe their group as "a drinking club with a running problem." At a Hash, one or more members (Hares) lay a trail, which is then followed by the remainder of the group (the Pack or Hounds). The trail often includes false trails, short cuts, dead ends, and splits. These features are designed to keep the pack together regardless of fitness level or running speed, as front-runners are forced to slow down to find the "true" trail, allowing stragglers to catch up.

Reason Number One to Stay on the Trail

This large Northern Pacific Rattlesnake (Crotalus oreganus) was spotted off-trail between Creekside Terrace paved parking and trail 30 on Saturday (8/20) during the recent BETA outdoor meeting. The Venomous and Potentially Dangerous Viper was estimated at over 3 and 1/2 feet and had 9 tail segments and a bud. The snake was monitored by BETA and a CHP officer until it moved well off trail.

Illegal Bypass Trail

Pam, BETA 16, observed that an illegal bypass trail is beginning to develop at the top of Trail 49 just beyond Meg's Rock. It is unfortunate in that the illegal trail has destroyed some beautiful native brush. It is suggested that BETA and BLM adopt the remediation of this illegal trail as a BETA project.

What goes up... by BETA 7, James

Downhill, Deep Sand, Dozens of Riders make Marshal Point 7 an interesting spot for a weekend of racing for Cristie and Scott.

"These (photos) give a little bit of the idea of just how wild it was. I think the most riders we saw on this little section at once was about 20 and the most down at once was probably 4-6. I'd say only about half of the riders actually kept their feet on the pedals through this. Most were having a great time on it! It was way above this in the ruts where folks were getting hurt."

BETA 26, Donna, spotted these Sea Otter Classic racers going through the Spring foliage racing toward the Laguna Seca finish.

This particular treacherous section along Lookout Ridge at Marshal Point Three claimed several riders. Fortunately there were no serious injuries encountered here through Sea Otter Weekend.

Two riders approached MP3. One was injured. BETA 7 and I prepared to begin treatment of the injuries to her lower extremities. As we assessed the injuries and planned a course of treatment we were informed by the victim's riding partner that he is a physician and all we needed to do was hand him bandages. That's what we did.
